Seven-day Workshop at Ranchi

This report documents a seven-day bamboo craft workshop held at Hehal, Ranchi (December 2010), focusing on integrated skill development for rural craft-persons. The programme combined training in tool use, small machines, natural dyeing processes, product design, finishing techniques, and costing. Participants were organized into groups to develop a range of products including baskets, trays, coasters, and lamps. The workshop imparted hands-on learning, along with demonstrations, talks and dialogues. Post-workshop recommendations included tool distribution models for individuals and self-help groups (SHGs), replication of moulds, and development of shared infrastructure for treatment and production. This field-level intervention aimed at strengthening bamboo craft practices through design and technology inputs is a good example of system level intervention as it was organized under the District Commissioner (DC), Ranchi, Shri K. K. Soan. He and the Secretary to Ministry of Rural Development, Govt. of India visited the workshop to get feedback from the participants.
